The realization that you have control and influence over your own life is a key concept you will need to understand to practice mindfulness. ~Janet Louise Stephenson

MindfulnessWhen is the last time you did absolutely nothing for 10 whole minutes? Not texting, talking or even thinking?

In his fascinating and informative TED Talk mindfulness expert Andy Puddicombe describes the transformative power of doing just that: Refreshing your mind for 10 minutes a day, simply by being mindful and experiencing the present moment. (No need for incense or sitting in uncomfortable positions.)

Puddicombe mission is to make meditation accessible to everybody: for a happier, healthier you.

Most people assume that meditation is all about stopping thoughts, getting rid of emotions, somehow controlling the mind. But actually it’s … about stepping back, seeing the thought clearly, witnessing it coming and going. ~Andy Puddicombe

It is ironic indeed that we cannot spare ten peaceful minutes to ourselves; being lost in the daily hustle. I mean all it takes is just few moments of ‘doing nothing’ to soothe our brains. I say everyone MUST do that. Thanks for the inspiring share.

This is really a wonderful post! When was the last time I did nothing for ten minutes? I don’t know. I don’t think I had the time for that. Never actually tried meditating, but this post made me realize its importance and benefits. Getting silent and refreshing my mind for ten minutes–everyday– is something that I can actually do. I learned a lot through this post. Great share!

Thank you for the reminder that only a few short minutes are required to clear the mind and then fill it with positive thoughts. Of course, the more time the better. However, it doesn’t require huge chunks of our day. Thank you for sharing this excellent article.

What a beautiful post this is!! The opening lines of the post say volumes about the content of the post. If I think about any ten minutes which I had spent not texting, chatting, working or even thinking, I guess there is no such moment in my life. Even if we rest, our minds keep on working on the thoughts rushing through the mind. Silence is really a benediction. I really liked the post, especially the washing machine part. I got a lot of learning through this post. Thanks for the share.

ten minutes… this is something we can all do. I’m guilty of rushing through my day, forgetting about what’s really driving me… Stopping and reflecting for 10 minutes I think can really set someone back on the right track. I’m going to try it. Thanks for this post.

This is my number one goal for the year ahead, getting into a consistent practice of mindfulness. Thanks for sharing this and a great practice here to embrace. Next month, I am attending Wisdom 2.0, and I am looking forward to learning much more about the cross-section of technology, business, and mindfulness. Thanks for sharing! Jon

    Hello Marty!

You know I have never actually meditated, my friends says I can’t sit still long enough! I do try always though to find good and positivity in everything that I do. Focus with ADD is always tricky but I strive to focus by making lists, working through them and ticking things off gives me a simple sense of satisfaction and acheivement!!

    Marty,

As a former professor of health and physical education, I taught courses in yoga (which included relaxation, chanting, guided imagery, visualization and meditation) and stress management. I attend an Infinite Way meditation group every Sunday and I do stop to pay attention to the moment whenever I remember. However, I have not maintained a steady, every day, routine for meditating and I know it is the consistency that trains us to let go of our human way of thinking and connect with the source energy. In my counseling and mind-body therapy work it is eseential that I remain present and aware in the moment. Thanks for this reminder to do this regularly for small periods of time.

    Warmly,

    Erica

Hey Marty…it is amazing how powerful just 10 minutes can be when they are mindful minutes. I am a big fan of meditation…have been a meditator for years and years, and wouldn’t be without it. It doesn’t have to be difficult..and it will change your life in ways you’d never imagine. Thanks for sharing this great info.

After I wake up in the morning I use to relax first for 10 minutes. I love the way you did some relaxation with yourself and I will try this.

    Hey Marty,

I can so relate to what he said. When people use to tell me to meditate I always would come back that I’ve never been able to do it because I can’t quiet my mind. No one at that time ever said that’s not the purpose of meditating. No one ever explained it to me properly so I was always lead to believe that’s what it was all about.

It took me roughly a couple of years before I finally was told the purpose of meditating and then it began to make more sense to me.

I’ve practiced for awhile now staying in the present moment and I’ve done really well. I now don’t dwell on things like I use to and I don’t let my mind wander anymore. I’m not perfect by any means but I’ve come a very long way and am thrilled with the results.

Thanks for sharing this message, very helpful.

    ~Adrienne

I liked his analogy of the washing machine, with our thoughts and emotions spinning round and round. Silence really is a gift to ourselves. You’ve inspired me to keep working at it. It’s a habit that I’ve built into my daily routine, but I often find my mind busy even during my “silent” time.

    Marquita,
thanks for sharing another wonderful post in regard to well being… love it.

Yes, meditation may be misleading… and each one of us know what that means. Having the determination and diligence to do just nothing for 10 minutes or more a day is not as simple as anyone say it is… even Andy Peddiconbe. Ho yes, it is simple to say it, to teach it and to debate… but only each one of us is the ONLY person who truly have to do it and know how to do it…

Way before officially start to meditate, I have found my self meditating on many occasions… and when I say meditating, I may not say the right word.. but I tell you… there where many times where I was lost into nothingness and yes, I know what that mean…and yes, I know that is wonderful to do and experience… but again.. only each one of us is able to define it… not certain what I commented make sense but I hope it does and will benefit others who at this time are wondering why they cannot do “nothing for 10 minutes”.
All the best and THANKS once again..

I’ve definately found meditation useful. I play a meditation audio on my ipod every night. Sometimes my mind is quiet, other times I just can’t shut it up. But I guess the development is getting to it being quiet more often and letting the emotions and feelings come up be okay.

It’s something everybody should do, thankyou for putting it out there.
