Good News: Your Genes are Not Your Fate

2011 October 4
by Marquita Herald

Nothing is predestined. The obstacles of your past can become the gateways that lead to new beginnings. ~Ralph Blum

your genes are not your fateThe days go by, and those well intentioned resolutions to exercise, eat healthier, take better care of yourself … well, they’re still on the list, but sometimes you’re just so darned busy! Sound familiar?

Well, I’ve got a message for you that may just inspire you to move all those “take-better-care-of-me” resolutions to the top of the list … because the good new is, your genes are not your fate, and you can start today to create not only a healthier but happier life.

In the following short TED video presentation USCF Clinical Professor Dean Ornish and founder of the Preventive Medicine Research Institute shares research that shows how adopting healthy lifestyle habits can affect a person at a genetic level. For instance, he says, when you live healthier, eat better, exercise, and love more, your brain cells actually increase.

Dr. Dean Ornish one of the leading voices in the medical community promoting a balanced, holistic approach to health, and proving that it works. The author of Eat More, Weigh Less and several other best-selling books, Ornish is best known for his lifestyle-based approach to fighting heart disease.

His research at the Preventive Medicine Research Institute (the nonprofit he founded) clinically demonstrated that cardiovascular illnesses — and, most recently prostate cancer — can be treated and even reversed through diet and exercise. These findings (once thought to be physiologically implausible) have been widely chronicled in the US media, including Newsweek, for which Ornish writes a column.

The fifty-something physician, who’s received many honors and awards, was chosen by LIFE Magazine as one of the most influential members of his generation. Among his many pursuits, Ornish is now working with food corporations to help stop America’s obesity pandemic from spreading around the globe.

Instead of trying to motivate [patients] with the ‘fear of dying,’ Ornish reframes the issue. He inspires a new vision of the ‘joy of living’ — convincing them they can feel better, not just live longer.” ~Fast Company

    Hi, Marty!
I most certainly agree that nothing is predestined, except for what we make for ourselves. Adopting healthy lifestyle habits , as Prof. Ornish suggests, can influence us positively. I try for myself to eat and live in a healthy way. It is not that it is only good for our body, it is also good for our mind and soul. You just instantly get better and more optimistic. Proven!

I guess they are right by saying that you are what you eat. It is so vital to treat your body right, so you can do what you need on a regular basis to improve your health. Thanks for the post!

I like that the present is the most prominent in that picture… Too many people tend to live in the future or the past too much, so much that they forget what is happening around them at this very moment. Thanks for the reminder. :)

    Hi Marty,
It is a very informative and motivational post.A healthier life style could increase brain cells and we should adopt a good and healthy life style so that life could become more easy to live.

I never realized that doing more and being healthier could actually lead to developing more brain cells, but that makes a lot of sense! Now I have no excuse not to start taking care of myself a little better – if it can actually make me smarter in a way, it’s definitely worth doing, right? :)

    Hello Marty

This is a great message of hope. The reason that I say it is a message of hope is we have heard so much about how life is determined by genes. In this short (3:14) video we discover that we are not totally controlled by our genes. With some self discipline and the desire to change the way we do thing we can make great improvements in our life.

    Thanks

    Hi Marty,

    Phew, that is good news!

I’ve heard of people reversing diabetes, cancer and all sorts of illnesses with diet and exercise. In fact, my friend Marcolino has throat cancer, it got so bad that he couldn’t speak but they couldn’t operate on it for some reason. He took matters in to his own hands and 13 years later he is fit, healthy and his life threatening cancer is now tiny and insignificant! Amazing!

Diet and exercise should never be underestimated!

    Thank you!

Great post, Marty! I know that in some ways I am definitely Steve and Faye Nicholas’ son. (For example, like my dad, I have the tendency to sometimes laugh so hard while trying to tell a funny story that it is hard for other people to hear it, and when I drive, if I’m not paying attention, I will speed up a little when the music speeds up.) However, there are some ways that I am definitely not. I think that it is more important to follow the Serenity Prayer and realize what things we can change and things that we can’t.

“We can change how our genes are expressed.” That sentence right there says it all. Choices. We decide every second HOW we are going to do xyz. Choices are what we are privileged with every day of our lives.

Thank you Marty for sharing this short video with us. It was just enough juice to get my brain and body to appreciate and be grateful for the choices that I’ve made so far in my life. I’m grateful for the choices I’ve made for my body, my health, my switch in business, my family, etc…

Keep sharing these great messages with us!

WOW. Just listening to him for 3 minutes increased my energy level! It’s one more confirmation that some slight edge steps I’ve taken in the last couple of months really are making a difference in my health, and I will begin to see and feel the difference soon.

Great article and video, Marty! Thanks for sharing.

    Hi Marty,

I am a true believer that we are accountable for our health, especially nutrition and exercise. The body is an amazing vessel and if you make the effort to make changes, your body can be forgiving. Of course this is only true if changes are made in time before major damage is irreversible.

Recently I talked to a woman who weighed about 250 pounds, however she changed the way she ate, started exercising, and has lost 60 pounds. She feels much better, has more energy, and of course feel more attractive. She is proof that changes can be made. It takes a lot of determination but it can be done.

It is comforting to know that processes can be reversed for people who set goals for changing their existing health conditions. Science and hard work is a great combination. Thanks for sharing.

    Hi Marquita:

What a great post and video. What this post has done for most of us, is to allow us to design our own lives especially how we chose to treat our bodies. I have watched doctors talk about what you just said that eating right, drinking more water and exercising can definitely reverse most health challenges or illnesses. I am still working on my own eating habits and exercise routines but I can say that after watching the movie Super Size Me there are just food I will not eat or give my daughter.

It is good to know that it is never too late to make the right choices about what we consume and how we treat our bodies.

    Thanks for sharing Marquita.

    Great news Marty!

I’m glad to know that the long hours I put in drinking (occasionally in moderation), smoking pot and not sweating it (stress management) are really paying off!

Seriously though, this is a great post and important for everyone, especially those who feel doomed if some health challenges run in their family.

More and more, science is showing that we create our reality which is good news to everyone who wants to create their life intentionally and bad news for anyone who would rather have excuses to lean on.

Few weeks ago, all of a sudden I started feeling very week. I could not even talk. My husband kept asking what I was feeling and I could not even explain. He offered to take me to the emergency room since I could hardly be sitting. My mind started thinking all kinds of things; I thought maybe I was having a heart attack. After 4 hours of tests, all the results were good, I went back home and I have been feeling wonderful. My point is that quality of life is the most precious gift. You realize it when you miss it. Thanks so much for such an inspiring post.

    WOW Marty!

I love how the doctor turned things around. Very inspiring story!

It’s a shame that we are not more educated in the power of nutrition and what it can do for our bodies. I really like Dean’s philosophy on holistic healing!

    Marty,
    more great stuff!

You are right on point with this issue of our lifestyles needing to be more focused. You have a design that we all can start to take control and live better lives.

I have to agree with the urgency as all are overweight and with diabetes. Most people do care yet have not reached that killing point. Most have no desire to change and give up that fast food and bad habits that are really killing them.

The more we are faced with facts, books and T.V. telling all to change before it is to late. We just go about life and believe our Dr. will have a pill that will take care of it all. We will just keep doing what makes us sick.

Waking up is the beginning and change is the step we all will take at different times. Most not until it will be to late to reverse all the damages. Too many to list here and feelings have been telling a majority of us, that time has been here.

Marty, thank you for reminding us there are solutions and time is can still be on our side. That is if we are willing to change now. I look forward to hearing more on this subject.
