How Your Attitude Colors Your View Of The World

The greatest discovery of my generation is that a human being can alter his life by altering his attitudes. ~William James

World AttitudesHave you ever considered how your attitudes influence your life experience? We talk about positive and negative attitudes, but attitudes are far more complex and certainly not so black and white.

It may help to think of your various attitudes about life as filters that color your view of the world. While it is natural to have opinions about many different things, underneath it all will inevitably be a core belief system is that is comprised of your fundamental attitudes.

This basic belief system, often referred to as mindset, affects our behavior, decision making and the way we approach life in general. Okay so where am I going with this? I want to introduce you to a women whose life is an inspiring example of the power of attitude, and she also happens to be the latest addition of our list of “Everyday Heroes” – Maysoon Sayid.

If you’ve never heard Maysoon talk, your first impression of her will surely be the fact that she has cerebral palsy. But as Maysoon says, I have 99 problems … and only one of them happens to be palsy.” Actually, that’s the name of her funny, touching and inspiring TED Talk.

Why Her Attitude Will Inspire You

A Palestinian woman from New Jersey, Zayid jokes about her family, global culture, and her life with cerebral palsy. Along with Dean Obeidallah, she founded the New York Arab-American Comedy Festival, now in its 10th year. She spends several months of the year in the Palestinian Territories running workshops for disabled and orphaned kids in refugee camps, using art to help them deal with trauma. And yes — if you’re an Adam Sandler fan, you’ll recognize Zayid as the woman behind the beauty-shop counter in You Don’t Mess With the Zohan.

Most of all you should listen to her because she will inspire you to realize that we each have it within our power to create the filters through which we see the world.

It is amazing what little things in life set us back or cause us despair.. Maysoon has done way more than many of us will ever do and she has what society calls a disability.. as she says she has 99 of them one being palsy. The majority of us have that many, or more without an actually scientifically labeled physical disability! She is an inspiration!

Welcome back Holly! So glad you enjoyed Mysoon’s presentation – she is inspiring isn’t she? And you are so right about how often it’s the little things that trip us up – which is just another reason why it’s so important to remain centered and focused on the things that really matter to us in life. Thanks for stopping by and sharing your thoughts. :-)

Thank you for sharing! This woman is such an inspiration. I am always so moved by people who have big challenges and still thrive. Makes me conscious of how little I allow myself the same privilege. I spend a lot of time waiting for this or that to happen and “then” I’ll be ready for this or that. Silliness. The time to thrive is every day.

Well said Kathy! I am so pleased so see so many people have embraced Maysoon’s inspiring message and find it as uplifting as I have. Great way to start a New Year. :-)

Another inspiring post from you Marquita! I love this video. Maysoon’s attitude and sense of humor is incredible.

After listening to her talk, it makes all that I deal with daily seem pretty small in comparison. She has overcome enormous odds with a positive attitude and a drive that’s magnetic. It’s hard not to want to let go of fears and self-imposed limits when you hear all that she’s accomplished.

Thank you so much for taking the time to share your thoughts on this inspiring presentation Rebekah. I agree that Maysoon has set the bar pretty high when it comes to positive mindset and not being defined by adversity.

    Marquita,
thanks so much for sharing this “Attitude” article with all of us… cannot express my full gratitude in words for doing it…

What I can say that once the video ended, I had tears coming down my face… the story and the memories that travelled in my mind while listening MaySoonZayid video got me into tears remembering that my attitude in past years helped me to overcome many challenges… BUT at the same time, I recognized that some of my past attitude stopped me from achieving much more than I did.

As your initial quote say: “The greatest discovery of my generation is that a human being can alter his life by altering his attitudes. ~William James”… I must recognize this has been true for me many times.

Now my attitude have changed dramatically, but I still recognize some limitations and I look forward to overcome them one by one as I did for others before.

THANKS so much for your sharing.

Thank you so much for sharing your thoughts Nick, you are such an inspiration to us all and I feel very fortunate to have you as a friend. So glad you were as touched by Maysoon’s message as I was – and yep, I was also shedding a few tears at the end. Wishing you all the best in this New Year!

    Hi Marquita,

A fine example of when we can get into a funk and “think” we have some struggles in our life. There is ALWAYS someone who has more on their plate.

We have to keep that in our mindset! Once we do, those thoughts that crop up will go away and we can plunge into what we need to do.

Yes, attitude is everything. Having a positive attitude will bring positive energy to us.

Well said Donna! I think just one of the reasons I love TED Talks so much is they provide a wealth of inspiration and education that we can all use in our daily lives. Thanks so much for contributing to the conversation – always appreciated. :-)

I enjoyed this talk Marquita. Our thoughts + The Emotional Charge from them + Action = Our Outcome. We we are not experiencing success and we are struggling in business or in life, then one or more parts of the formula are out of alignment. Our mindset is running us.

Thanks for taking the time to contribute to the conversation Rachel, and very good point about the important role that mindset plays in our view of the world.

    Hi Marquita,

What an amazing woman and inspiring to start out the day with. I totally agree that your OWN attitude will dictate the rest of your day. You may still run into some stumbling blocks but it is all in the way you handle it.

Have a wonderful day and weekend. Monna

    Marquita,

What an inspiring talk. Thanks for sharing this. It is so valuable to see a real live person struggling with ailments most of us could never imagine. And we manage to complain about so many insignificant things. We have so many unnecessary fears and put limits on ourselves because we want to “look good” and impress others rather than just go for it and be willing to look foolish or fail, if necessary.

    Warmly,
