Life is a Big Canvas: Use All the Colors You Can

If you ask me what I came to do in this world, I will tell you, I came to live out LOUD. ~Emile Zola

Life is a Big CanvasLife presents us with such a colorful tapestry of opportunities and experiences. Every day, we have the option to live with passion, to open ourselves to new possibilities, and reach for the stars. We have the freedom to boldly live, laugh, and love … to live a live filled with all the colors of the rainbow.

So why don’t we?

For the most part it’s simply the reality of responsibilities and commitments of day-to-day living, the bigger picture of life gets away from us and by the time we realize life has grown a little … well, bland, we’re not sure what to do about it. Eventually we convince ourselves how lucky we are to have what we have, because others have it so much tougher; and in the end we settle for a life that is simply good enough.

The problem is the years of our life have a way of passing ever faster, as the days and weeks blend into one task or distraction after another, until one day we look back and see little more than fleeting memories in shades of gray.

Grabbing more from life doesn’t require massive change – that thinking can quickly send you into overwhelm. Besides this isn’t an indictment of your current life, it’s about increasing joy and creating more memorable moments … one step at a time.

Living a color-filled life is unique to everyone. It’s not about external influences or possessions; it’s about attitude, passion and joy. Begin where you are. Use your talent, enthusiasm and drive to jazz up your life in small ways by shifting your perspective and shaking up your daily routines. Have fun! Add a little spontaneity! Create more memories! Every positive action you take matters. Every small move creates a ripple of color!

Life is a big canvas

The truth is many people are content to simply let life carry them along, because it’s just too much work to take the controls. How about you? What one thing could you do today to add more color and passion to your life?

Here are a few suggestions to get started:

  • Get a professional massage at a spa.
  • Learn something new.
  • Get a make-over.
  • Set a stretch goal (that has nothing to do with a “should”) and really go for it.
  • Read the Kama Sutra with your lover.
  • Create a fake persona and play tourist-for-a-day.
  • Test-drive your dream car.
  • Go to a comedy club or mystery theater.
  • Learn to cook an exotic foreign food.
  • Take an art class.
  • Walk barefoot on the beach.
  • Learn to play an instrument.
  • Get a room in a posh hotel for a night of romance with your sweetie.
  • Go on a spur-of-the-moment road trip.
  • Do something nice for someone anonymously.
  • Take a dance class.
  • Join Toastmasters.
  • Write a book.
  • Climb a mountain.
  • Volunteer.
  • Do that one BIG thing.

You don’t need to wait for permission. Begin today. Choose to be inspired and motivated enough, to live without limits. Get off the couch and do something! Let go, get gutsy, and get going!

As “YOLO” goes, we only live once so we have to make the most out of it. We should go out of our comfort zone and explore the world with our loved ones.

Loved this post. Years ago there was a program called Queen for a day which I thought about when reading your article. Sometimes we need to step outside of our safe place. We all need to take time for ourselves and making it fun it a wonderful idea.

Hi Marquita! I think this is not necessary but I have to say that this is the best post I have ever read by far. I love how you inspire my soul to try new things that will color my life purple, pink, and anything girly with a chance of blue. Thanks a lot! :)

Oh, that is one of my favorites as well Kimba. A good friend of mine introduced that to me when we were in college – we would get dressed up and head to Rodeo Drive in Beverly Hills and spend the day in our fake personas – trying on clothes, sipping espresso in outdoor cafes. Once we even got the nerve up to ring the bell on the door of an exclusive fur shop and they let us try on mink coats. We knew they saw through our game, but I think they got such a kick out of it they played along. :-)

Love this – especially the one about not colouring inside the lines. Barefoot beach walking it one I do each day and I feel free as well as in touch with nature.
Thanks for the greaty suggestions- one big thing for me is to complete my book and secondly to get those paints out and I feel a new heart series looming

This is such a timely post for me! I’ve been in a bit of a rut lately, working… working… working! I haven’t taken time to stop and really enjoy the LIVING part of my life.

Your question, “What one thing could I do to add more color and passion to my life?” really got me thinking. I need to take a break – it’s a mama weekend for me. It’s summer time. And all of my “work” will be right here waiting for me when I get back.

I am borrowing your suggestion to play tourist for the day and I’m going to revisit my little city with my children as if we’re just arriving and have no idea what this place is about. We might even get a hotel on the river.

    Thanks for always inspiring, Marty!

I’m so glad you enjoyed the article Janet, and especially to hear that you’re going to take some time for yourself this weekend! Your plan sounds wonderful. I must confess I love it when we get visitors from the mainland because taking them around to visit my favorite places on the Island makes me feel like I’m on vacation as well. :-)

This absolutely, positively, without a doubt the most inspiring and motivating article I have read to date. Yes, I use hyberbole with liberty, but it is well warranted. You have such a way with words and these truly spoke to me. Thank you SO much!

I feel like I have been using that 8-pack of crayons that you get in grade school forgetting that there is a 64-pack version available out there ;-)

It is ironic that the older we get, the more complacent we get with where we are. We should be wiser, right? We should choose to move to a better place if we don’t like where we are. It is easy to get overwhelmed and get bogged down in the details instead of just taking a small step in the right direction.

Memorable moments are what life is about. It’s what adds meaning to our own life and the relationships that we have with others. I love your suggestions for creating a little more color and passion in your life. In the process of adding some sapphire blue for peace and serenity, cinnamon red for adventure, and spring green for life and passion.

New colors for a new day … thanks for the inspiration :-)
