Taking Time to Appreciate a Few of Life’s Carefree Moments of Pure Joy

There is more to life than increasing its speed. ~Gandhi

img002Most of us understand and appreciate the value of gratitude; it’s just that it’s so easy to overlook the moments of pure joy we experience each day as we set about maneuvering through our hectic lives.

My little gal-pal Lucy over here on the left reminded me recently of the rewards of taking a little extra time to recognize and take full advantage of these special moments.

Let me back up and share what inspired this post … one morning recently, when I first began to wake up, I realized Lucy was sitting next to me on the bed, so close I could feel her breath on my face. I decided to keep my eyes (mostly) shut and see what she would do. She stared at my face for the longest time, turning her head one way and then the other in that “curious” way dogs will do. Then she inched a little closer, and a little closer, until her nose was practically touching mine and it was all I could do to keep from laughing. Then she moved so close she was leaning on me, and laid her head down on my neck, and just took a deep breath and made this cooing sound and settled in. Wow, what a sweet moment.

The truth is, if we can learn to recognize and take that little bit of extra time to appreciate them, we’d find that there are millions of smaller events when, for just that brief moment, we are filled with pure joy and don’t have a care in the world.

I’d like to share with you a few of my favorite moments of pure joy, and hope that this list will inspire you to think about and share a few of your own …

  • Getting on a plane and having the entire row to myself.
  • Perfect parallel parking on the first try.
  • Hitting a bunch of green lights in a row.
  • Roasting the perfect marshmallow.
  • When the vending machine spits out two things instead of one.
  • Eating ridiculous things for breakfast (Cold pizza and coke – yea!)
  • Taking off my bra off at the end of the day. (You have no idea guys …)
  • Finding paper money in my pocket I didn’t realize I had.
  • Taking an afternoon nap, especially on a cool rainy day.
  • Seeing someone succeed at something I’ve taught them.

There is nothing like that first kiss, the one where you feel like you’re going to fall inside the other person, when you get dizzy and forget who you are. ~Author Unknown

  • That first real kiss.  Good, bad or indifferent, we never really forget our first real kiss. I truly hope yours was as spectacular as mine – just the two of us on a small boat lazily drifting down the Louisiana Bayou under the early evening shade of mammoth trees … yowza!
  • Getting an actual handwritten letter.
  • The smell in the air just before it rains.
  • That moment when you dare to look at someone you’re attracted to and discover they are already looking at you.
  • Wearing my favorite old comfy t-shirt.
  • Accomplishing something everyone told me not to even bother trying because it couldn’t be done.
  • That ping when I hit the sweet spot on the golf ball when driving off the tee.
  • Watching someone open a gift I know they will love.
  • Overcoming something I have long feared or avoided.
  • The smell of fresh cut grass.
  • Crawling into bed on sheets that have just come from the dryer.
  • Falling asleep to the sound of gentle waves washing up on the nearby beach.
  • Unexpected money.  Don’t you just love those 3 paycheck months?! I no longer get “paychecks” but I do love the periodic “surprise” royalty checks from Amazon for sales of my books in other countries. There’s something really kind of mind-boggling thinking about people as far away as France or Germany actually paying to read something I’ve written!
  • A perfectly executed clean twist of an Oreo cookie.
  • When little kids hit the age where they start saying “Hi!” to anyone and everyone.
  • Eating the first freshly baked cookie from the oven even though it’s way too hot.
  • A long hug when I really need it.
  • How thrilled my dog is to see me when I walk in the door, even when I’ve only been gone for the ten minute walk down the hill to grab the mail.
  • Slurping the last of the sugary milk out of the cereal bowl.
  • Popping bubble wrap.
  • Sneaking McDonald’s up to my room in an expensive hotel and watching the faces of the people in the elevator as they start picking up on the smell of french fries.
  • Enjoying my first cup of coffee while standing on my deck on a chilly morning watching the sun come up over Haleakala.

House of the Rising Sun

What’s so wonderful about becoming more aware is discovering that there are awesome moments happening every day all around us; things that perhaps we’ve never given a second thought … like when a real person answers the phone.

How about you … what are a few of your favorite moments?

There are a lot of things to thank for in our lives. We should not focus on the negative things happening in our lives. Giving attention to little details in our lives can help us think of more happy thoughts to enliven and invigorate our soul.

    Hi Marty,
what a gorgeous picture of your dog and thank you for sharing that lovely moment.

I appreciate all those examples you are sharing and I can relate to most of them.

One of my moments of joy is watching the birds on the lawn in the morning eating the seeds I scattered for them.

Thank you so much for sharing your inspirations!

“When a vending machine spits out two things instead of one.” That’s definitely awesome, and then I remember that, that was the same vending machine that took my money and never gave me anything. So I guess we’re just even.

That’s true, we never forget our first kiss. I think we’d never forget our first anythings, that’s what makes it so special. Nice share.

    Hey Marquita,
Reading your posts is always a treat!!! Reading through your post, I remembered some of the best moments of my life which are of great value to me, but in this rat race of making big in life, I completely forgot about those things. The joy we gain in such tit-bits is unexplainable. To add, to your list, I love walking on an empty beach and watching the calmness of the moon, just going crazy when it rains and getting drenched and lots more. Thanks for this great reminder.

This is a lovely post. I just love your style of writing and your site being so personal. P.S. Lucy is such a lovely little lady, is she a Shih Tzu?

    • February 26, 2013

Thanks so much for your kind words Kelly! Good call on Lucy, she’s a Shih Tzu / Pug mix. It’s hard to imagine now, but when I adopted her the owners were about to dump her at the local shelter because they were breeders and felt the odd pedigree would turn out an equally odd looking dog they couldn’t sell. For me, it was love at first sight :-)

Your Lucy is just so adorable, my teacup poodle Barbara was the same way. I miss her everyday. Cherish the times you have with Lucy.

Oh Marty! LOL, I too, love to pop bubble wrap! I would do it more at work if my co-workers didn’t get so annoyed! I love my morning cup of coffee, alone, in my chair. A kiss or hug from my grandsons. The warmth of a sunshine. Watching the first spring bulbs show their faces….and on and on….You have inspired me to make my own list and put it in my gratitude jar.
    Beautiful post, (as usual)

Marquita, what a fabulous post. Thanks for reminding us to stop and smell the roses. My four cats and my dog provide me with some of the best moments. I’m going to the International Kennel Chicago dog show this weekend with my son, and that’s going to provide some great moments. I don’t have a bra, but changing into my flannel pants and a t-shirt after a day at the office is the best! :)

Marty, Lucy is adorable! I can see why she would bring you so much joy :) What an amazing list of favorite things, I can relate to so many – glad to see that I’m not the only one that would publicly admit to getting joy out of popping bubble wrap, lol. The thing that brings me joy and literally makes my heart jump and sing is when I hear my granddaughter say, “Grammie.” Everything about her presence and her sweet little voice lights me up!

I thoroughly enjoyed reading your post, love it when I read a blog that makes me smile :)

I was pleased to see your quote from Ghandi. He has so many great ones. What a guy!

We have some of the best moments in common. I love hitting green lights and the smell of freshly cut grass (among others) too.

And why on earth is popping bubble wrap so good :-)

Welcome back Anne – had to chuckle when I read your question about popping bubble wrap. Honestly my friend, it is one of those things that if you don’t “get it” there isn’t really a way to explain it. Some people actually take it to the extreme of obsession because they just can’t see those little bubbles of air not pop them. Yet another of life’s imponderables :-)

    Hi Marty,

What a warm and fuzzy post! As I blog hop today, this brought a smile and a giggle to my day and I thank you for that.

I completely understand the feeling of you and your dog. I work with my three dogs around me. Sometimes I can be a work-aholic, but a nudge or a cuddle from one of them reminds me to take time out. My hound is a needy dog and always needs contact. Sometimes I just look at him breathing and it slows me down.

So to come up with a favorite moment: Being at one with myself in a hot bath with essential oils. Gotta do that once a day!

Hey Donna, yep I know you’re also a lover of dogs. One of my favorite authors, James Rollins is also a dog lover and he recently adopted two puppies from this local shelter. He posts pictures of them on FB all the time and spoke affectionately the other day about how they curl up on his feet under his desk as he’s working. Lucy does the same thing. We do love our dogs, huh?

Terrific list – just what I needed just now. Thank you for sharing. Or, as my toddler would say, “Hi.”

So glad you enjoyed the article Liz, and thanks for the cute (mental) image of your toddler saying “Hi” :-)

  16. February 19, 2013

This is a fun list. I have a couple.
A hot bubble bath at the end of a long day.
The perfect weather day, where the warmth of the sun is just enough to overcome the chill in the air.
