The Biggest Obstacle to Achieving Dreams and Goals

2013 January 7

The future depends on what you do today. ~Mohandas Karamchand Ghandhi

dreams and goalsLife is hard work. That’s just the way it is. We waste so much time searching for the easy answer, the shortcut, the quick fix, the magic pill and the hidden secret.

There is no secret … life is great deal of committing, experimenting, falling down and getting up, learning and growing, and the evolution begins with showing up.

The truth is, the biggest obstacle to achieving dreams and goals is taking the first step … waiting for the right time, waiting until you learn more, have more, do more.

Sometimes you just have to jump in and get started – somewhere, anywhere – even when you don’t know exactly how to do something.

You just have to take the first step.

  • This life is yours. Take the power to choose what your want to do and do it well. Take the power to love what you want in life and love it honestly. Take the power to walk in the forest and be a part of nature. Take the power to control your own life. No one else can do it for you. Take the power to make your life happy. ~Susan Polis Schutz
  • There are no shortcuts to any place worth going. ~Helen Keller
  • You see, in life, lots of people know what to do, but few people actually do what they know. Knowing is not enough! You must show up and take action. ~Anthony Robbins
  • Don’t wait until everything is just right. It will never be perfect. There will always be challenges, obstacles and less than perfect conditions. So what? Get started now. With each step you take, you will grow stronger and stronger, more and more skilled, more and more self-confident and more and more successful. ~Mark Victor Hansen
  • The two important things I did learn were that you are as powerful and strong as you allow yourself to be, and that the most difficult part of any endeavor is taking the first step, making the first decision. ~Robyn Davidson
  • Take the first step in faith. You don’t have to see the whole staircase, just take the first step. ~Martin Luther King, Jr.
  • Do not wait until the conditions are perfect to begin. Beginning makes the conditions perfect. ~Alan Cohen
  • One reason so few of us achieve what we truly want is that we never direct our focus; we never concentrate our power. Most people dabble their way through life, never deciding to master anything in particular. ~Anthony Robbins
  • Don’t listen to those who say, “It’s not done that way.” Maybe it’s not, but maybe YOU will. Don’t listen to those who say, “You’re taking too big a chance.” Michelangelo would have painted the Sistine floor, and it would surely be rubbed out today. Most importantly, don’t listen when the little voice of fear inside of you rears its ugly head and says, “They’re smarter than you out there. They’re more talented; they’re taller, blonder, prettier, luckier and have connections.” I firmly believe that if you follow a path that interests you, not to the exclusion of love, sensitivity, and cooperation of others, but with the strength of conviction that you can move others by your own efforts, and do not make success or failure the criteria by which you live, the chances are you’ll be a person worthy of your own respect. ~Neil Simon
  • Take the first step and your mind will mobilize all its forces to your aid. But the first essential is that you begin. Once the battle is startled, all that is within and without you will come to your assistance. ~Robert Collier
  • Twenty years from now you will be more disappointed by the things that you didn’t do than by the ones you did do. So throw off the bowlines. Sail away from the safe harbor. Catch the trade winds in your sails. Explore. Dream. Discover. ~H. Jackson Brown, Jr.
  • It doesn’t matter what you did or where you were…it matters where you are and what you’re doing. Get out there! Sing the song in your heart and NEVER let anyone shut you up!! ~Steve Maraboli
  • Impossible is just a word thrown around by small men who find it easier to live in the world they’ve been given, than to explore the power they have to change it. Impossible is not a fact. It is an opinion. Impossible is not a declaration. It is a dare. Impossible is potential. Impossible is temporary. Impossible is nothing. ~Author Unknown

I have so many dreams in my life that’s why I am doing my best to achieve it without hurting someone and when I make a decision I always put in my mind that I will never regret it because that’s what I’ve chosen and I will face the consequences no matter what.

Just always believe in your self and with the guidance of GOD.

Impelling share Marquita . The photo is self explanatory and explains the share very much . Its the easiest to blame every thing about life . But we should realize that happiness is a choice and we can make a difference . I completely agree that if we take the first step our mind will mobilize all its forces to our aid .

What you do today can greatly influence what you can become tomorrow. Many people are impatient that they want to just secceed immediately without taking up plans and objectives or goals. In making goals, you have to make sure that they’re realistic and achievable. Thanks for posting this and for the awesome quotes rom different people.

I agree! Life requires hard work and we will surely reap what we sow if we start to do it now. Everything will fall into its proper places if we learn to do the right things and choose the right decisions in life. Thanks for sharing this with us! :)

Quote- “life is great deal of committing, experimenting, falling down and getting up, learning and growing, and the evolution begins with showing up”.

These lines remind me of a poet who explains that I don’t want to reach to the final destination. I don’t want to reach the heavens, or the ultimate success, the poet says I just want to live the life the way it is. I want to fall and get up again and feel the sorrows and teachings this life has to deliver me.

Thanks for the lovely post Marquita. You shared really inspirational points.

These are great inspirational words you have disseminated here!! Indeed, true it is significant to believe in our own capability to do something big in life. Many individuals face obstacles, because they lack the essential will power and self confidence. Thanks for the share. Loved it!!!

Hi Marty I like this quote best “, but few people actually do what they know” that is often me, I remember saying to my husband a couple of years ago, “I know WHAT to do, I just need to do it”. At the time, I didn’t really think about that, but it’s funny to remember it now.

The very first thing that we need to do in achieving dreams and goals on how to face the obstacle that we met cos it is a matter of an attitude that has a strong courage to fight it. By the way without obstacles we cannot achieve our dreams and goals. It is part of the process.

I’ve always believed that the first step to your goal is the most important one. It means you’ve started your journey and it takes you one step closer to achieving it. It’s also the hardest one, so it’s a job well-done.

    Hi Marty,

I have to agree with Donna on this one about that particular quote. Mostly because I guess I had a conversation with a young lady just this morning about that same topic.

We give it our all and we still aren’t where we want to be but we’re closer. “With each step you take, you will grow stronger and stronger, more and more skilled, more and more self-confident and more and more successful.” That’s exactly what I told her because she’s come such a long way and for most people it takes years. We are fighting with our own minds.

Love these quotes and watch out, I may use some of these in the coming week.

So true about wanting the quick fix. At times I still want to look for that. It’s brought me some great resources but in the end consistency is really where it has been at for me.

What popped out to me is the quote:

Don’t wait until everything is just right. It will never be perfect. There will always be challenges, obstacles and less than perfect conditions. So what? Get started now. With each step you take, you will grow stronger and stronger, more and more skilled, more and more self-confident and more and more successful. ~Mark Victor Hansen

I used to be that way a very long time ago. Then I realized the deeper issue was that I had an issue with my self-esteem. So I rolled up my sleeves, death with THAT issue and was able to have the self confidence to take action.

Great stuff! Lots to think about.

the photo at the top says so much.
I think a great quote from Martin Luther King about the first steps.
When at an important decision – junction – perhaps it is not the end you should plan but have a plan for along the way. That will be the dream; the intention, which will prepare for the decision.
