Are You Using the Power of Self-Motivation to Achieve Your Dreams?

2012 January 15

A motivated person is happier and more energetic … seeing positive end results in his or her mind.

Motivation is that driving force that pushes you to go after the things you want and can be applied to virtually every action and goal: motivation to change your life, to make the most of your time, to study a foreign language, be a better parent, make more money, get a better job, buy a new house, own a business, or become a writer, a doctor or a lawyer.

Although motivation from other people can be a good start in building a positive attitude and outlook in life, reality is that you’re not always going to find the support and encouragement you need from other people to achieve your dreams and goals. In fact, sometimes those nearest and dearest to you may have a vested interest in your not changing.

It’s not that they don’t care it’s just a part of life. They may not fully agree or support your goals, or they may fear what will happen if you change … and sometimes it’s simply that the other people are caught up in their own lives at the moment and simply don’t realize you’re waiting for them to motivate you.

Regardless of your level of external encouragement, true motivation is an internal force as evidenced by the fact that two people can read the same book, or listen to the same inspirational speaker but respond differently. One person might feel motivated to immediately act, the other not at all.

This guy says, “I wish someone would
come by and turn me on.”
What if they don’t show up?
You’ve got to have a better plan for your life!

Quite honestly, I was one of the most non-motivated people ever. I still dreamt big but never had the drive to put anything into place. I’ve adopted a lot of great mindsets and activities since then but the one thing I swear to this date kick-started my attitude change was a gym membership!

Get out there, get physically active in some way and feel the different both in your body and your mind!

When I want to achieve something I push myself to the limits and give all the best that I can to reach that goal. Self-motivation played a large role in all the success that I have achieved.

Although we are inspired to do many things because of our loved ones and friends, I totally agree with you that self motivation is the secret to achieving greater confidence and personal success. Your post have truly hit the spot. I particularly loved the quote from Sheila Bethel, “One of the most courageous things you can do is to discover who you really are, and what you believe in and where you want to go in life.” Discovering yourself and knowing where you want to go is the first step in achieving personal success. Knowing what your goals and dreams are, will pave the way on how you can plan to achieve them.

This is so true if you don’t believe in your self and stay motivated by your own internal thinking no one else will.

Most of the times others keeps as behind because as you said they might don’t understant your goals or believe that they are not good for you. The fact is that we should depend only on our selfs to reach our goals

    Hi Marty,

thanks for the very inspirational post and video.

Being motivated from within, or self motivated, is, as you made it very clear, where it is at.

For me to truly know what I want and deciding what to do only started to happen when I committed to having a relationship with myself first.
What helps me to stay motivated is when I remind myself how I want to feel (my why) as a result of having achieved what I intend to do.

This is a very big subject and I appreciate how well you have covered the different aspects in your article and video.

I love the quotes you include in each of your posts! When we are motivated from within, we are also more likely to have those feelers out to recognize the opportunities when they come, rather than passing them by without noticing.

I am often amazed to read stories on FB, or hear others speak of experiences they had growing up in my home town, or during the same 4 years I was at the same college. Even my own brother, just 2 years younger than I am, tells quite a different story of growing up with our parents. I am convinced we get out of it what we are looking for… regardless of where or what “it” is.

Hi Marty, This is such a nice post. Your article is great, the video is lovely with so many special sayings and I love the quote from Dr Suess. Motivation is a key to accomplishing more. I know that, but often I take the more comfortable choice, putting off, and thinking, “There is always tomorrow.” I also have to remember t give myself credit for the things I do get accomplished and to be grateful for that!
Thank you for the lovely post,
    Bless you!

    Marty,

Twice I have entered a comment here and after clicking “Submit” it read “You have too many letters in your name, go back….” When I went back, the message was gone.

I am writing this message a 3rd time because you have given so much to the TSA community and others.

Motivation is not the only quality that counts, although it is certainly essential. Two other equally important qualities are persistence and giving. Intermittent blog posts, caring occasionally, once in awhile going beyond the average, does not lead to true success. And giving only once in awhile or giving less than you receive, does not lead to success.

Marty, you have exhibited the qualities of a true leader. You are motivated and you consistently give much more than you receive. Although you may not always receive the acknowledgement you deserve, just realize that your giving IS noticed and appreciated.

    Warmly,

    Dr. Erica

Hi Erica, sorry about the problems you experienced leaving a comment. As soon as I read it I ran several tests using longer names and even different browsers and had no problems leaving messages. So no clue what happened, but thanks for being so persistent, and for your kind and thoughtful comment.

    Hi Marty:

Self-motivation is so critical to success. We cannot rely on others to keep us going or to get us started.

That was a great video! It so many great nuggets in it. :)

Hi Marty, thanks for this inspiring post! I agree that true motivation is an internal force that helps you to ahieve great success if you apply it in your life. When you are motivated you do whatever it takes to make your dreams come true. Sometimes this means stretching beyond your comfort zone or dealing with obstacles but if you remain determined and positive you will be rewarded.

I know myself that the more motivated I am the more they are excited themselves. My husband used to criticize my business and my efforts, now he brags to others about my accomplishments. In the beginning, I could not expect motivation from him at all!

If you want to do something on your own, then your motivation has to be your own. Most of us grew up in a school system where we were doing things FOR other people, mainly coaches, parents and teachers. So we’ve become accustomed to looking outward for motivation. But you’re right, you have to find your motivation on your own. Its a good lesson to for parenting. Find ways to let your kids do something on their own, without any prodding.

    • January 16, 2012

Hi Anthony, thanks so much for contributing to the conversation. Excellent point you made about parents and the example they can provide for their kids – really valuable insight. Thanks!

  16. January 16, 2012

It’s true, I definitely agree. If you are vibrating in a positive level, it attracts success in whatever it is that you’re working on. Vibrating on a positive level requires work within you, which means, operating on a state of gratefulness. Thank you for your enlightening post. A lot of people will benefit from this.

Hey Cherrie, so glad you enjoyed the article. I know exactly what you’re saying … sometimes when I’m struggling for a solution, or trying to come up with an idea, instead of getting frustrated or down I think of it as an exciting opportunity and just brainstorm like crazy about “how” I can make it happen. Never ceases to amaze me how often ideas magically appear … usually in the early hours of the morning just as I’m waking up. Really love how that works :-)

  17. January 16, 2012

Awesome post and I am loving that video! It was so relaxing. I agree that motivation only comes from the self. If one depends on someone else to do it – it will NEVER get done, or get done for a very short time.
Mindset is the key here. When we have a dream, a passion, a great idea, we can over come the negative thoughts in our heads by self-talking ourselves into a positive mode. We can not control anything but our own minds. What a concept. If one really thinks of it and understands it, they can do anything the want. Stepping out of that box may be difficult, but it is only mind over matter.

Hey Donna, thanks so much for sharing your inspiration – you always add great insight to the conversation! So glad you enjoyed the video – little confession. The reason I held off doing anything like this for so long is every job I’ve ever had I ended up handling a lot of the creative on top of my own sales and marketing duties. When I was in direct sales, I spent so much time creating training and motivational presentations I finally had to say enough – never again! Well, you know how that “never say never” thing goes … anyway, already have 3 requests to create custom motivational videos for former colleagues so I’m hoping I haven’t reopened pandora’s box :-)

So true. Confident and motivated people aren’t so because they’ve had an easy ride in life. They’re so DESPITE troubles and external stumbling blocks. Motivation has to come from the inside. Like you said, people are too taken up with themselves to worry about ‘turning someone else on’. We all have our own issues and motivation is a self-taught skill.

    • January 16, 2012

Hey Stacy, welcome back and thanks for sharing. Good question! Life naturally runs in cycles – we all have ups and downs – but when someone is in a prolonged slump it’s important to be willing to take a closer look at what’s actually happening. If the “bad luck” involves the same thing happening over and over, such as one bad relationship after another, then it’s time to at least consider we may be contributing to the problem by choices we either are or are not making. I know many people are feeling trapped in jobs they hate because of the economy … in that case the problem may be caused by external forces, but we can still choose how we respond by becoming proactive. If this job sucks, what would I rather be doing and what can I do today to learn new skills or network to begin getting myself in a better position to make that a reality? Hope that helps :-)

Stacy, there is always a reason for everything. Jut hold on to your faith and never let go :D
