You Are Shaping Your Future With Every Choice You Make

2011 December 19

The future is not some place we are going to, but one we are creating. The paths are not to be found, but made, and the activity of making them, changes both the maker and the destination. ~Author Unknown

You are at this very moment living the life you’ve chosen for yourself.

While there are surely some factors we cannot control, such as the economy and the weather, we do choose how we respond, so ultimately the big finger of praise or blame must point right back at the image we see in the mirror, because the reality is our lives are the culmination of the choices we make every single day. Choices that either lengthen or close the gap between our current reality and the life we really want and deserve.

To have the ability to make choices is a great power as well as an enormous responsibility. And with each choice there is a consequence. Of course, there are many who play the blame game for things that happen to them in life and there are others who assume the victim role, rationalizing to self that their reality is someone else’s fault or simply bad luck.

Whatever you call it, there are moments in all our lives when we find ourselves at a crossroad. The choices we make in those moments, and our willingness or refusal to accept the consequences, can define the rest of our days.

For many people this is actually the biggest challenge they’ll face in the entire process of creating a life plan because they are not comfortable thinking in terms of their own wants and desires. In fact it may even feel selfish or egotistical to spend time focusing on what choices will bring them happiness and a fulfilled life.

The simple truth is that if you are feeling like your life’s not your own it’s because up to now you have been relinquishing your power and time to others. They may not consciously realize it, probably didn’t intend it … and they certainly didn’t come by it naturally. You had to give it to them. So now you have to exercise your power to take it back.

If you desire to change your current reality the first step is to accept that you are the one in control of your time and your choices. YOU can decide this very moment to start closing that gap and creating the life you really want for yourself.

    Love visiting Your Blog.
We are what we think, people don’t realize the power of thought. It is great to think of a life of abundance but do we really think of it constantly, do we really “meditate” on it, or are we stuck in our everyday average thinking, to be great takes as all things Practice even practicing our thought processes for a better life.
    Great Blog…

I love the title of this blog! I definitely agree with it. Our actions and words spoken reflects on what kind of people we are. It’s upon us, if we go straight ahead or walk along the rough road. We can’t rely on other people because the last decision for us to succeed is all upon us.

Great article! I really love reading your post. It is my first time to comment but it is not my first time reading your works. Maybe I can’t stand anymore not to comment to such talent! Hi marty,
Always good visiting you as you always have excellent reading.

I remember being told that I am exactly where I want to be or at least think I deserve.
It took some time to get a hold of that and realise that I was in control of my future and no one else.

another bit of wisdom that was shared with me a long time age …. everything we do is for selfish reasons …. even the most noble acts.

I can totally relate to this post. It’s been how many years when I kept on making sacrifices for my family. Now that another year will come, I already told them that I want to start in my own. I mean even just a short break for the stress that I’m experiencing. I do hope everything will be according to my plan by next year.

How exciting James! Thanks so much for sharing your thoughts on this subject and I also hope things go your way with your plans next year. I think two of the biggest challenges people have to overcome when they go for a BIG goal is having a strong Plan B (or even Plan C) so that they are not thrown off completely when they run up against the inevitable “detour” along the way. In fact I write a lot about that in my new book. The other thing is developing the resolve to “finish” even if the end result doesn’t quite look like what we envisioned when we started. I’ll be cheering for you!

      • December 26, 2011

Thanks for a great comment! Yup! The good thing about me is whenever I have plans, I make sure that I also have alternative plans to support that or at least let my previous fulfilled plan be connected to my new plan. It’s just like I’m making my own road to success.

This was a great article, and I totally agree with you on all points!

I love how you underscore the enormous responsibility we have in the choices that we make. Each decision either takes us closer TO our goals, or one step farther away from our goals. If you look at your goals in this way, it makes the choices a little easier to make, I think (although not always!)

You are so right Natasha. I remember one hotel I worked for – they had just gone independent when I joined them. The former corporate owners left them with no files, no accounts, basically we were going to have to reinvent the wheel for a hotel that was already 30 years young. When the general manager offered me the job he said “the good news is, we have full accountability for our future, success or failure …. the bad news is, we have full accountability for our future, success or failure.”

It’s so true that we are creating our lives each and every way. Because we don’t always have instant manifestation its hard to notice it sometimes.

When we pause and reflect it is much easier to notice how we are conscious creators.

It is so important to realize that our choices create our future. So simple yet profound. And some of the choices are just based on tuning in and doing what we “feel” or “sense” is the next step, not knowing what it will lead to. And controlling our time is more important than most of us realize. Time can be used wisely or it simply slips away and I we wonder where it went.

hi Marty, you are always such a great reminder of life’s great lessons! Every crossroads ‘defines’ us and every decision – even the decision to ‘not make a decision, but wait and see’ – shapes us, our self-perceptions and ultimately the life we get. Ultimately, it is our self-perception that shapes our choices and therefore our lives.
Love the cover of your new book by the way :)

    Hey Marquita,

This is great. It reminds me a lot of James Allen’s teaching in As a Man Thinketh.

We are almost for certain, the cause of even our own circumstances because of past choices and decisions and behavior. There is only one known exception and that’s when divine intervention occurs in the normal course of our lives and history. Other than that, we can point at circumstance or others for our lot in life, but 3 fingers always point back…

The good news is that once you understand this, you CAN control your life and steer it in the right direction. And if you find yourself going the wrong way, well, you make course corrections and be grateful that you know that you can change your circumstances over time.

    Great Post!

Welcome back James … so glad you like the article. I appreciate your excellent point about course direction. I’m sure that is something that you must work a lot with in your coaching business. I do believe that when it comes to goals we tend to excel in the front end – creating lists of goals; unfortunately it’s on the back end – adjusting for course corrections, and actually finishing what we start, that results in shortfall when it comes to actually achieving most goals. Thanks for contributing to the conversation!

    Hi Marty,

As always there is great wisdom in your words.

Sometimes I think we get the life we are prepared to put up with! While my life is great, I know there is so much more that could be done. What I find is that when I really look at what is important to me, I am very happy in the here and now.

I believe we have to watch taking on other people’s ideas of happiness rather than finding our own and celebrating when we are there. In the end, the exsternal really is an ilusion.

Agreed… you do have a choice in everything in life. If can effect everything from health, familial relationships, relationships with partners or even friends, and more. It may be a scary responsibility, but the key is to take it like a challenge and think positive. I always like the saying “if you first don’t succeed, try again.”

such a joy to read your fresh article just on any subject. I get goose pimples everytime. I can feel all the passion you put into your presentation. The subject matter is in sink with what is being talked about through our global communities this week.

Out thoughts shape all around us. We are surrounded by what was manifest by our own visons. They developed with our desires which most come from seeing, hearing and feeling.

I understand that most people blame everything except realizing they created the good and bad situations. If they only would think good thoughts. Talk about positive things and visualize them. If our go on feeling bad and have thoughts of pain and sickness. That is what you alone bring into your life. However, if you start right now to only focus on good and enjoyable emotions that is what you will be overwhelmed with.

Our mind has no limitations as far as you can imagine is the only limitation. Think being blessed for you can still breath. Think of being loved for that is what you share everyday. Think of being helpful and abundance all around you. There shall it be.

I don’t know about everyone else. Yet, everyday I am blessed. Everyday I have abudance surrounding me. I have a lifestyle that allows me to share all my love with everyone. I find good in everything. Yes, sometimes it may take me longer to visualize goodness in every given situation. I have been mastering this visualization for over 27 years and everday I find something new. Time is on our sides and we shape our worlds.

Marquita, your amazing and well loved by all of us. I thank you for sharing such usable content that can only increase more people to be awaken for the first time. I am blessed to call you a friend and look forward in more inspirational wisdom you can only produce with your unique style of presentation. Thank you!

Great post, Marty! It reminds me of the story where the identical twins had an alcoholic father. One became an alcoholic, and the other became a teetotaler. When they were asked why, each said, “With a father like mine, what could you expect?” One of my high school teachers had an alcoholic father, and because of that, he wouldn’t even let his kids have cough syrup if it had alcohol in it. While I think that there are some things that we have to be sensitive about the way we explain things, I couldn’t agree with you more about the importance of our response to things.

Steve, I knew someone who was a teetotaler because of his alcoholic father also. We used to go to discos and he would go off to the bar for a jug of iced water. He had never had a drop of alcohol and was determined not to.

I agree, that’s it’s a real challenge for some of us to create a life plan. After all, it wasn’t something we were taught at school, and it seems kind of strange at first.

And, it’s a wonderful thing to do, to have everything planned out and to be able to envision what we want and to just KNOW we are going to get it!

I am so glad to see this post. We all have a choice. That “inner voice” will sabotage it sometimes, but we must remember it is only a voice from the past. We are so strong it is mind boggling. Once we take that first step into our power, the rest is pie. It is only a learned behavior. I see so many with limiting beliefs because they don’t understand that they DESERVE! A simple trick I tell people to do (only because I have done it myself) is to get some red lipstick and write on your bathroom mirror : “I DESERVE.” Leaving it there for 30 days will seep into the subconscious.
    Try it ….its a blast.

It’s great that you should mention limiting beliefs and the lies we tell ourselves. This is so true about the ways we blight our own successes. We need to build up the confidence to go for the things we want, or success would never be something we know.

Reality is how we perceive it, and that just means it’s there to shape the way we want it. Normally you’d say some things can’t be changed, but there are no limits to what we can do if we want it bad enough. The only limits are the ones we ourselves set.
